Black-owned businesses accounted for 5 percent of American businesses, according to a 2007 report by the federal Small Business Administration from 2002 U.S. Census Data. The federal government as well as a number of private organizations make it their mission to increase that percentage. Therefore, there are special resources to help African-Americans get their businesses off the ground. African-American entrepreneurs with a good business plan have good odds of getting the help they need using the right channels.
