Dollars and Sense: 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge is tackling financial inequality, one high school student at a time.

Sitting in a pew one Sunday at Elm Grove Baptist Church, Alex James learned about a program that would have a lasting impact on his professional aspirations.

A speaker from 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge was recruiting high school students for a financial literacy program called Dollars and Sense.

At the time, James was considering a degree in engineering. But after taking the course as a senior at Mckinley Senior High School in 2012, he discovered he had a knack for financial planning and investment. Now a sophomore majoring in finance at LSU, he recently accepted an investment banking internship with Goldman Sachs next summer.

“It was just another person in the community who put the bug in my ear,” James says. “I had no idea it would be so powerful.”

For generations, issues that arise as a result of income inequality have taken a silent yet tangible toll on communities in Baton Rouge.
